The department offers B.E. in Mechanical Engineering with an annual intake of 120 students, M.Tech in Product Design and Manufacturing, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Machine Design and Tool Engineering with an annual intake of 90 students. Research and Development established in 1986 offers M.Sc. (Engg), Integrated Ph.D.and Ph.D. programmes under VTU, Belagavi. Both B.E (Mechanical Engineering) and M.Tech are Autonomous programmes. B.E in Mechanical Engineering got accredited by NBA, New Delhi for three years in 2000, for five years in 2003, 2008 and for three years in 2015. M.Tech in Product Design and Manufacturing got accredited for three years in 2014. The department is engaged in sponsored research, consultancy, testing and characterization majorly in the areas of advanced materials development, processing and design.

    The focus areas of research for the department are Nanotechnology, PMC structural materials for UUV applications, thin film technology, TFT, plasmonic solar cell, solar thermal, multi-layered thin films, laser assisted thin films etc. The department has completed more than 100 projects awarded by agencies like AICTE, DRDO, ISRO, DST, LRDE, NRB, AR&DB, CABS, ENV, ER&IPR, GTRE, NMRL, NPOL, UGC, ARDB, with 15 ongoing research projects. The program faculty members have developed many new advanced materials and products such as unmanned underwater vehicles bodies; fiber metal laminates gun barrels, underwater turbine blade structures, solar cell, solar thermal tubular structures etc. More than 25 research scholar enrolled for Ph.D in the R&D centre. More than 40 research scholars have been awarded Ph.D thorough the R&D centre by various universities. The R&D recognised by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Mysore University, Tumkur university and Mangalore University as a centre of research studies. The faculty members have more than 400 National / International Journal / Conference publications to their credit.
    Bosch Rexroth training centre (Centre of competence in automation technologies) The R V College of Engineering has established the regional Centre of Competence for Automation Technologies in 2010 which is a joint venture between Bosch Rexroth AG, Germany and RVCE. The training centre caters to the training needs of academic institutions and industries to keep pace with the fast growing engineering industries in the country. Bosch Rexroth, the industry partner for the project, is one of the leading suppliers of automation technology and world market leader in Industrial Hydraulics, Industrial Pneumatics and PLCs. The objective of Bosch Rexroth didactic is to bridge the technological gap and focus on the rural segment student and offers various certified training programme access to the comprehensive expertise covering the whole spectrum of automation designed for technical training and education.
