Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons.)

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons.): Interdisciplinarity, Unique Features and Internships

We believe in a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to art education that integrates traditional skills and contemporary conceptual approach to artmaking. Apart from an intensive studio practice and exposure to the foundations of liberal arts such as sociology, literature, philosophy and politics, the students will participate in the interdisciplinary seminars, develop their communication skills and learn to form a thesis. In this manner, our students will be more equipped to contribute meaningfully to the contemporary art field. Our art education programme is grounded upon a rich visual art experience for JSLH’s undergraduate students. The programme is divided into four interconnected segments: study, skill, concept and creativity. Each of the courses will fall into one of these components which will run throughout the programme.

What is Fine Arts?

  • Fine arts is a term that refers to types of art that are created primarily for aesthetic and intellectual purposes rather than for practical or functional ones. Fine arts include painting, sculpture, drawing, and other visual arts that express the artist’s imagination and creativity.
  • A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) is a four-year undergraduate degree program that offers specialized training in various fields of fine arts.
  • A bachelor of fine arts course consists of core and elective subjects that cover both theoretical and practical aspects of fine arts. Some common bachelor of fine arts subjects are art history, art theory, art criticism, art appreciation, and studio practice.
  • A bachelor of fine arts degree is a professional qualification that prepares students for careers in the art industry, such as artists, curators, art educators, art critics, and art administrators.
  • The bachelor of fine arts scope in India is wide and promising, as there is a growing demand and appreciation for fine arts in various sectors, such as media, entertainment, education, and tourism. A bachelor of fine arts painting and drawing is one of the most popular and traditional specializations that allows students to explore and master various techniques and styles of painting and drawing.

Scope of Bachelor of Fine Arts

  • Study: BFA is the foundation for art creation. If traditionally study was understood as a visual analysis of the environment and its objects through sketches, drawing and clay-modelling, we expand this limited perspective to include the study of space, colours, body, text, etc.
  • Skill: Skill is a matter of contention among artists and art educators. It is either celebrated or criticized by practitioners and art teachers. We believe in the centrality of skills, but also in the need to rejuvenate its meaning and purpose. A skillful artist, nowadays does not only know how to draw, paint, sculpt or take photos, but also to amalgamate visuals and ideas, artmaking processes and its conceptualization.
  • Concept: Concept is central to contemporary artmaking. In addition to courses on art history, theory and philosophy, the students will be exposed to the latest developments in the fields of cultural studies, critical theory and visual culture. Theory classes will include visits to art galleries and studios, and interaction with artists, curators, collectors and art dealers, which will give the students a firsthand exposure to the dynamics of the art world.
  • Creativity: Creativity binds all the segments of the programme. Study, Skill and Concept should help the students to develop their unique visual language and artistic concerns. The courses in this segment will be dedicated to both traditional and contemporary media such as painting, video art, sculpture, installation art, performance, digital art etc.
